08.01.15 – Group Glitch: Final + Review + Minutes

Final Product

Below is the finished product of all our 3D modelled heads put together which were animated and given the appropriate effects, such as glitching, in After Effects. The song we chose is called Doubt by Twenty One Pilots.

Review

The Idea
idea-clipart-ideaWe were all in our own way inspired by the theme that was given to us (glitch), so the first thing we did when we got together to discuss the project was to spill and share all of our individual thoughts and aspirations for the project. I thought that creating something abstract would give us the opportunity to be more creative and allow us to explore the theme further. Ultimately we decided on an idea that wasn’t so hypothetical which I thought was an interesting concept and was on board with. We decided to create a short animation which would show snippets of our faces in our real world which then start to glitch out and become “replaced” with 3D modelled version of our faces which have escaped from their 3D world.

Getting Footage
Using a camera provided by Jordie and a tripod provided by Harry, me and Harry set out to find interesting locations to film. We filmed ourselves doing various things such looking blankly into the camera, looking around and pulling different expressions with our faces. There’s me below doing what I do best: pulling faces!

ME

We also attempted to take footage of our eyes and lips and although some shots didn’t turn out so bad, we only ended up using a single shot of Harry’s eye in our finalised project. Although Jordie and Dylan were not present for filming due to prior arrangements, they each pulled their weight and filmed themselves at home as soon as they could which helped us stay on track!

Modelling the Heads
After obtaining the footage, our next task was to model our heads which was in my opinion the most time-consuming and challenging step in this entire process of making this short video. You can click here to go to the blog where I go into more detail about this.

Animating & Adding Effects to the Heads
Airplane Clip Art #776Having left my family behind in order to embark on this journey here in the UK, I tend to visit back home quite regularly (when possible) in order to maintain my relationship with my family. Unfortunately, since I do not own a laptop (but will soon – hopefully!) I could not contribute much further in terms of editing and adding effects to my modelled 3D head in After Effects so I delegated Jordie to do the job.

Finalising the Project
Upon my return, we all got together for one last time to finalise the project by putting everyone’s work together and adding in the music and any final touches before handing it in!

Meeting Minutes
taking-notesNeedless to say, I felt extremely guilty about having burdened Jordie with more work and abandoning my group due to my badly timed trip. Therefore, I decided to make it up to everyone by willingly offering  to write up all the minutes for our meetings. I aimed to make them as detailed and professional-looking (and sounding!) as possible and although Michal’s contribution towards this project was non-existent, I decided to include him in the minutes. You can see the minutes I prepared below.

 New Business

  • Motion: Share ideas and then come to a consensus.
Details: After sharing  ideas on how to approach the assigned theme (glitch), we then came to a consensus and agreed on one particular idea: a short animation starting off in a 3D world which includes a 3D version of our faces. The 3D heads then escape the 3D world and penetrate our real world as we see our real faces glitching out and being  replaced by the 3D version.
    Vote: Unanimous approval.
  • Motion: Make a rough plan of our work schedule.
Details: We discussed how we should undertake this project and developed a rough plan:
Task 1:  Gather enough footage of our faces and then 3D versions of our faces in Maya using stills from the footage obtained.
Task 2: Import 3D Models into After Effects and proceed to animating and adding the appropriate effects to them, such as the glitching out effect.
Task 3: Assemble the project and implement finishing touches – combining the animated heads with the raw footage and adding in the music and any sounds.
    Vote: Unanimous approval.

Next Meeting

We will meet in a premeditated location where we will gather footage of our faces in front of various backdrops.

Next Meeting Agenda Items

  • Meet at specified location.
  • Bring camera and tripod.
  • Gather a sufficient amount of footage.

Adjournment
Meeting adjourned at 13:30.

 Agenda
Old Business

  • We discussed the chosen concept for our project and formulated a rough plan of our work schedule.

New Business

  • Gather footage of our faces.
  • Make 3D models of our faces.

 Old Business

  • Motion: We discussed the chosen concept for our project and formulated a rough plan of our work schedule.
Details: After deliberation, we collectively agreed on which idea to use for our project and then created a rough plan to keep everyone coordinated and organised.

 New Business

  • Motion: Gather footage of our faces.
Details: We all met at a premeditated location and chose various backdrops to film our faces. We decided to gather footage of each of our heads doing contrasting things which we would later decide whether or not to include in our final piece. Such footage included us staring blankly into the camera, looking in different directions and lastly forming different expressions with our faces such as anger, sadness etc.
    Vote: Unanimous approval.
  •  Motion: Make 3D models of our faces.
Details: Using stills from the obtained footage, we are to make 3D models of our faces using Maya. We will then use these 3D models in conjunction with the obtained footage.
    Vote: Unanimous approval.

 Next Meeting
We are to bring our finished 3D modelled faces which we will refine and then import into After Effects to animate. We will also add numerous effects suitable to the theme, such as the glitching out effect.

 Next Meeting Agenda Items

  • Bring finished 3D modelled faces.
  • Refine and polish any inconsistencies.
  • Import into After Effects and add animations and effects.

 Old Business

  • Motion: We gathered footage of our faces and then made 3D models of them.
Details: After obtaining the required footage our faces, we then used still images from said footage in order to make 3D models of our faces.

 New Business

  • Motion: Polish and refine any inconsistencies in our 3D models.
Details: We all brought our 3D models and enhanced and corrected the ones we thought required it.
    Vote: Unanimous approval.
  •  Motion: Animate and add effects to finished 3D models in After Effects.
Details: After applying the finishing touches to our 3D models, we imported the finalised versions into After Effects. We then animated the heads in a similar but slightly               dissimilar manner and added various effects that give the illusion that the heads are glitching out.
    Vote: Unanimous approval.

 Next Meeting
We are to start finalising and assembling our project by adjoining the animated 3D models and their integrated effects with the raw footage. We are also to add any desired music and sounds.
